| History: |
- Founded in 1971 (as L’Alliance Laurentienne des Métis et Indiens sans statut du Québec) mostly represented non-status Indians until late 2000s.
- Adopted 4th generation cut-off as membership policy by 1976.
- Started using current name in 1983.
- Before 1992, the Alliance defined “métis” as “mixed-race”, which is the most common usage of the term in French. Since the Supreme Court of Canada’s Powley decision in 2003, the AAQ has increasingly supported the self-indigenization movement.
- In 2007, had 53 locals, including 36 active ones. Lost many of its locals to mass exodus to Confédération des peuples autochtones du Québec in 2006.
- Accused its former “chief” Guillaume Carle (2003-2005) of several crimes after he left to found Confédération des peuples autochtones du Québec in 2005.
